Today, Senators Schumer, McCain, Durbin, Graham, Menendez, Rubio, Bennet, and Flake announced a Bipartisan Framework for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Therein, the Senators confirmed that the U.S. immigration system system is broken and that having 11+ million undocumented individuals in the U.S. with no path to citizenship was unacceptable. The Senators made their announcement one day before President Obama was to make his announcement in Las Vegas. However, it appears that the White House is satisfied with this group’s announcement.
While the plan did discuss enhancing security and being tough of individuals with criminal histories, much of the plan seems to move forward with steps like: decreasing visa backlogs for family and employment cases so that illegal immigration was not more attractive than the legal process; creating work authorization for undocumented individuals in the U.S. that may also lead to lawful permanent residence (or a green card); and addressed the thousands of children (DREAMers) who arrived in the U.S. through no fault of their own.
Naturally, it will be some time before Philip Levin & Associates knows the exact terms of any Comprehensive Immigration Reform but we are happy to see that these types of talks are now happening.
