An E-2 visa is a visa given to investors from certain countries that have treaties with the United States. These treaties allow American citizens to invest in businesses in those countries, move to and reside in those countries, and direct and develop or be employed by the company.
Reciprocally, citizens of those countries can come to the U.S. and invest in an ongoing business, purchase, create, or start their own business, reside here, and direct and develop or work for the business. As long as the owner/investor is directing and controlling an ongoing business that is “doing business,” he or she is entitled to remain in the U.S. in E-2 status.
