The LRIS (Lawyer Referral and Information Service) of the Bar Association of San Francisco has been helping the San Francisco Immigration Court for over two and a half decades. The LRIS assistance comes through their “Attorney of the Day” program. These attorneys work for the day on a pro bono basis with the Immigration Court on removal proceedings to help individuals and families in need of an immigration lawyer.
While the partnership between LRIS and the San Francisco Immigration Court is long standing, the court recently added expedited dockets. The court put these special dockets in place to help with the growing number of cases caused by the rapid increase of migrating minors from Central America. The expedited dockets include an increase to eight Attorneys of the Day from the LRIS to facilitate the increase in cases and help the mounting number of Central American immigrants and immigrant children here in the United States. This is coming at a critical time as an excess of 2,000 cases are still to come this year.
