Anchor: And new tonight at 9 complicating this already tragic case as we mentioned the suspect is an undocumented immigrant and is a similar case to the death of Kate Steinle. She is the young woman who was killed at pier 14 in San Francisco after an undocumented immigrant shot her San Francisco of course a sanctuary city of and President Trump often referenced the Steinle case when he tried to make his case for building a boarder wall between the US and Mexico.
KRON4 Alley Reed sat down with immigration attorney tonight and joins us live now on details where this latest case goes from here, Alley?
Alley Reed: The suspect is an undocumented immigrant who authorities believe was living in Iowa for four to seven years the immigration attorney I spoke to today say by now immigration and customs enforcement is on top of this.
Anchor: First degree murder charges were filed in district court in Poweshiek County where suspect Christian Rivera lived after he admitted to killing 20 year old Mollie Tibbetts and dumping her body in a field. San Francisco immigration attorney Phillip Levin.
Phillip Levin: ICE has most liking processed this person. They have gotten all the information they need so they can go to the Mexican consulate in Des Moines, say, and ask for or ask that the consulate at least begging the process travel documents. Because most likely they don’t want this person to be in an American jail or an Iowa State prison for his entire term which could be many many decades.
Anchor: Police were able to track Rivera by using surveillance video of the route Tibbetts was seen jogging last month and say he confessed and brought them to the body. President Trump once again showing his disapproval of the countries immigration system.
President Trump: It should have never happened, illegally in our country we have had a huge impact but the laws are so bad. The immigration laws are such a disgrace we are getting them changed but we have to get more republicans, we have to…
Anchor: Brooklyn Iowa where the abduction and murder occurred is not a sanctuary city. But even if it was there is no safety for criminals.
Phillip Levin: Sanctuary city would not matter in this situation, if this gentleman is going to be convicted of murder that’s and aggravated felony and under the law aggravate felons are almost always going to do jail time.
Ashley Reed: Bail is set at a million dollars if convicted Rivera could face life in prison without the possibility of parole, Iowa does not have the death penalty. Reporting live from San Francisco Alley Reed, KRON4 news.
